Arusha National Park day trip: what fits in one day
The park works well as a day trip destination. It is close enough to Arusha to see in a day, and a guided walk and a canoe trip are separate activities on top of the drive. A day trip does not automatically include a walk or the canoe, so check what the tour includes before you book.
The city is a different outing. The museums, markets and the clock tower sit in Arusha itself, and the park ticket does not cover them. Plan the park and the city as two separate days, or as a morning and an afternoon if you start early and the roads are clear.

Arusha tours: four kinds of day
What each option covers and what you arrange yourself.
| Tour type | Where | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Park day trip | Arusha National Park | Whether a guided walk is included, and who pays the park fee |
| Canoe outing | Small Momella Lake | Needs to be arranged in advance, two hours |
| City tour | Museums, clock tower, markets | Museum entry is separate from the park ticket |
| Coffee tour | Community plantations on Meru slopes | Coffee preparation and tasting, offered by local tour providers |
No single price covers park, canoe and city together, because they are run by different organisations. For most visitors with one free day, the park day trip is the simplest choice, with the city tour on a second day.
Arusha city tour
Museums, a roundabout and two big markets.
A city tour usually strings together a few fixed stops. The Arusha Declaration Museum in Kaloleni and the National Natural History Museum on Boma Road are run as separate sites. The Cultural Heritage Centre sits on Dodoma Road. Read more in our museums guide.
The clock tower is a landmark roundabout in the centre. Legend has it that it marks the midpoint between Cairo and Cape Town, a tale rather than a measured fact. The Central Market, known as Soko Kuu, and the Kilombero market are the large markets in the city.
Museums
The two national museums are separate institutions with separate entry. Check opening hours and ticket prices on the day.
Markets
Check the opening hours before you go, arrive before late afternoon and do not rely on Sundays.
Staying safe
Travel advice for Tanzania warns of rising kidnapping and extortion crime in Arusha and recommends avoiding walks and overland trips after dark. Arrange your transport in advance for the evening.
Arusha coffee tour
Coffee grows on the slopes of Mount Meru.
Coffee tours visit community plantations on the Meru slopes, with a chance to see coffee prepared and to taste it. A walk to a community market takes about two hours and 3.4 kilometres there and back. That distance belongs to that market walk only, not to every tour from Arusha.
Coffee tour prices vary. Ask what the tour includes and whether any village fee is extra. The things to do guide covers Tengeru and other stops outside the centre.
Tours beyond Arusha
Bigger trips have their own guides.
For a multi-day safari, see the guide to the Serengeti from Arusha. Treks and day trips near Moshi are covered at Kilimanjaro National Park.
Arusha tours: frequently asked questions
Can I visit Arusha National Park in one day?
Yes. The park works as a day trip. Start early, because the gates close at 6 p.m.
Is a canoe trip included in a day trip?
Not automatically. Canoeing on Small Momella Lake is a separate activity that needs to be arranged in advance. Check the tour description.
Does the park ticket cover the museums in Arusha?
No. The museums are run by other organisations and have their own entry arrangements.
Is there one price for park, canoe and city together?
No. They are separate visits run by different organisations, so each is priced on its own.
Is this the official site for Arusha tours?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not connected to Tanzania National Parks, the City of Arusha, any museum or any tour operator.
