Arusha hotels and lodges: how to choose an area
Arusha has everything from simple guesthouses to lodges with gardens, and the right pick depends on your first morning. Do you need to reach an airport, start a Mount Meru trek at Momella Gate or enter the park by the main gate at Ngongongare? The area you choose changes the length of that first transfer more than the star rating does.
This page does not recommend individual hotels or rank areas. It shows the four areas people search for and the kinds of places you can stay in and around the park. If you plan to climb the volcano, read about the Mount Meru climb first, as the huts on the mountain are booked together with it.

Where to stay in Arusha
Four areas to use as a planning grid. They are not a ranking.
The city centre
Close to the Clock Tower, the markets and Boma Road with the National Natural History Museum. A good fit for a city day and for early departures to a park by road. Keep the advice on after-dark travel in mind and arrange rides for the evening. See the Arusha city guide.
Njiro
Njiro is the district name you will see on booking maps. Ask the property for the exact transfer time to the airport and to the park gate you need, as it differs from one address to the next.
Usa River
The main park entrance, Ngongongare, is near Usa River, and there are places to stay in this area. It suits a park day or the start of a Meru trek.
The park edge near Momella
Lodging around Momella puts you close to the start of the Mount Meru trek and to the lakes. See the Momella Lakes page.

Arusha accommodation inside the park: huts and campsites
Public and special campsites, and two huts on Mount Meru.
The park has public and special campsites, and two mountain huts on the Meru route, Miriakamba and Saddle. Huts and special camps need a reservation in advance. The amounts below are from the 2023/24 tariff for visitors from outside East Africa. Check the current amount before you book, and ask whether a tour price includes them.
| Item | Age 16 and over | Age 5 to 15 | Under 5 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain hut, per person per night | $30 | $10 | Ask at the gate |
| Public campsite, per person per night | $30 | $5 | Free |
For most visitors who want a bed rather than a tent, a lodge in town or near the park is the easier choice, and the huts only make sense as part of a Meru trek. Campers should reserve first and check the current charges.
Questions to ask before you book

What does the price cover?
Check whether the rate includes breakfast, taxes and park transfers.
Is it open in your dates?
Ask for the room or hut to be confirmed for your exact dates. The weather page shows the seasons.

Arusha hotels: frequently asked questions
Where should I stay in Arusha?
There is no single right area. The city centre suits museums and markets, Usa River suits the main park gate, and the Momella area suits a Mount Meru trek. Choose by where your first morning starts.
Can I sleep inside Arusha National Park?
Yes. The park has public and special campsites, and the two huts on Mount Meru, Miriakamba and Saddle. Reserve ahead.
How much does a hotel in Arusha cost?
Rates differ by season and property. Ask for a total price in writing, with taxes, and check what is included.
Do I need to stay near the park for a day trip?
No. The park is roughly 30 to 45 minutes from town by road, so a day trip from the city works well.
What do the huts on Mount Meru cost?
The 2023/24 tariff set $30 per person per night for visitors aged 16 and over from outside East Africa and $10 for ages 5 to 15. Check the current amount before booking.
Does arusha-national-park.org book hotels?
No. This site is a travel guide. It is not connected to any hotel, lodge, tour operator or Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).
