Arusha, Tanzania, in brief
Arusha is a city in northern Tanzania, and it is the safari centre of the north. Most visitors pass through on the way to a park or to Mount Meru. The area under the Arusha City Council had 617,631 residents at the 2022 census. It is often called the safari capital, a nickname rather than an official title.
Mount Meru rises behind the buildings, and Arusha National Park lies on its slopes, roughly 30 to 45 minutes from town by road. That makes the city an easy base for a park visit. If you want to see animals and the Momella Lakes in one day, look at the Arusha National Park day trips and plan the city for a separate half day.
This page covers the centre, the markets, the museums, Lake Duluti and the points that matter for safety. The city and the park are two separate visits, with their own tickets and their own opening times.

The Arusha Clock Tower and the centre
A roundabout, a story and a good place to get your bearings.
The Clock Tower stands on a busy roundabout in the middle of town, and most people use it as the landmark for meeting points and directions. Locals like to say that it marks the halfway point between Cairo and Cape Town. Treat that as a story, not a surveyed fact. The tower is worth a look, but there is no ticket and no tour attached to it, and traffic around the roundabout is heavy.
From the centre you can walk, in daylight, to Boma Road. The National Natural History Museum is on this road, in the former German military and administrative buildings. The museums page has details on it, on the Arusha Declaration Museum in Kaloleni and on the Cultural Heritage Centre on Dodoma Road. For the background of the old buildings, read the history of Arusha.

Maasai Market and the big markets in Arusha
Arusha has several large markets. The big ones are the Central Market, also called Soko Kuu, and Kilombero. Both are working markets for local shoppers, so go with a plan and keep your valuables out of sight.
The Maasai Market, also called the Curio Market, sells crafts and souvenirs and is on Tanesco Road. It usually opens at 8 or 9 a.m. and closes at about 6 p.m., and it may be closed on Sunday. Ask your hotel about the day you want to go before you set out.
If you prefer a fixed-price visit with workshops and galleries, the Cultural Heritage Centre is a separate place, covered on the museums page.

Staying safe in Arusha
Calm, practical advice for a normal city visit.
Avoid walking after dark
Germany's foreign office warns of rising kidnapping and extortion crime in Arusha. It advises against walking in the city and travelling overland after dark. Arrange a pickup for evenings instead of walking back.
Check the current advice
The US travel advisory for Tanzania is currently at Level 2, after a period at Level 3 from October 2025. There is no blanket all-clear for Arusha, so read your own government's advice shortly before you travel.
Keep daytime plans simple
Do the market, the museums and Boma Road in the morning and early afternoon. Keep phones and cameras out of sight in crowds, and carry a copy of your passport rather than the original.
Plan arrival times
If your flight lands late, book your transfer before you leave home. The airport guide explains the two airports and how far they are from the centre.
More to see around Arusha
Pick a half day or a full day.
Beyond the centre, the trips people take most are the national park, Lake Duluti and a coffee farm on the slopes of Mount Meru. For parks further away, such as Tarangire, see the guide for Tarangire National Park. For Moshi and Kilimanjaro, head to Moshi.
Arusha, Tanzania: frequently asked questions
How many people live in Arusha?
The Arusha City Council area had 617,631 residents at the 2022 census. That is the figure for the council area, not for the whole region, and it has changed since 2022.
Is the Arusha Clock Tower really halfway between Cairo and Cape Town?
That is a popular story. It is not a surveyed fact, so enjoy it as a tale about the city rather than as geography.
Is Arusha safe for tourists?
Most visits are trouble-free, but official advice asks you to take care. Avoid walking and overland travel after dark, arrange pickups for evenings and check your government's current travel advice before you go.
How far is Arusha National Park from the city?
Roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road, depending on traffic and the gate you use. Ngongongare, near Usa River, is the main entrance.
When is the Maasai Market open?
Usually from 8 or 9 a.m. to about 6 p.m., and it may be closed on Sunday. Ask your hotel for the day you plan to visit.
Is arusha-national-park.org an official site of the city or the park?
No. This is an independent travel guide, not the website of Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), the City of Arusha or any museum, and it is not connected to a tour operator or hotel.
