The Mount Meru climb in short

The regular climb of Mount Meru starts at Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. You arrange it in advance, and an armed ranger accompanies every group. Porters are part of the setup. You sleep in two mountain huts, Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut, on the way up and down.

Plan for 3 to 4 days, with 3 days and 2 nights as the shortest version. Four days are recommended for acclimatization, which is worth following if you can fit the extra day. The route runs from Miriakamba to Saddle, back to Miriakamba and then down.

Route, huts and ranger

How a climb is organized.

One regular route

The route starts at Momella Gate. There is no choice between several regular summit routes, so plan around one route rather than a menu of trails.

Miriakamba Hut

The first hut sits at about 2,500 m. Huts are charged per person and night and should be reserved in advance.

Saddle Hut

The second hut comes after Miriakamba. The way runs from Miriakamba to Saddle, back to Miriakamba and then down.

Armed ranger and porters

The park requires an armed ranger for the climb and arranges the group at Momella Gate. Plan on porters as part of the organization.

Before you start, read about the volcano on the Mount Meru page.

Mount Meru hike: days needed and acclimatization

Why the extra day helps.

A Mount Meru hike is more than a long walk. Proper acclimatization matters, so follow the ranger's and the hut plan. Four days are recommended. Meru is also preparation for Kilimanjaro, but being fit for Meru does not protect you from altitude sickness.

If you plan to climb Kilimanjaro afterwards, read the guide to the Kilimanjaro climb and decide how much time you can give each mountain. For the Meru climb itself, the practical advice is to choose an operator that offers four days if you have any doubt about altitude, and to listen to the ranger.

Costs that add up

The 2023/24 tariff items for a climb, in US dollars for international visitors. Confirm current amounts before you pay.

ItemInternationalUnit
Conservation fee, age 16 and over$50 main season, $45 low seasonPer person
Conservation fee, age 5 to 15$15Per person
Hut, age 16 and over$30Per person and night
Hut, age 5 to 15$10Per person and night
Meru ranger$15Per group and day
Guide$20Per group and day
Rescue fee$20Per person and tour

International adults pay $50 (2023/24 tariff) or $70, depending on the rate TANAPA applies, so the conservation fee may be higher than in the table; check the current amount before you book. Porters, transport and meals are separate and depend on your operator. There is no ready-made total, so the real cost is the sum of these items plus your operator's price. For most visitors who want a safe and simple booking, a guided package that names every fee line is the better choice than arranging pieces separately. See all fees on the park fees page.
